Intense Pulsed Light, commonly called IPL or an IPL photofacial, is a nonsurgical light-based treatment used to improve visible redness and brown pigmentation. At Hagen Health & Absolute Aesthetics, IPL treatments are personalized to address your individual skin concerns while supporting a clearer, more even complexion.
Unlike a laser, which uses a single wavelength, IPL delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light. Specific wavelengths are absorbed by hemoglobin in visible blood vessels and melanin within areas of excess pigmentation, allowing redness and discoloration to become less noticeable over time.

IPL does not cure rosacea or prevent future sun damage. Maintenance treatments, medical skincare, and consistent sun protection may be recommended to help preserve your results.
Every IPL treatment at Hagen Health & Absolute Aesthetics begins with an individualized skin assessment. Dr. Elizabeth Hagen, ARNP, will evaluate your skin tone, the type and depth of discoloration, recent sun exposure, medications, medical history, and treatment goals.
Not every red or brown spot should be treated with IPL. Conditions such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation require careful evaluation because heat and light may worsen certain forms of pigmentation. Patients with melasma may benefit from a personalized melasma treatment plan using prescription skincare, medical-grade products, or chemical peels instead.
IPL can reduce persistent redness, flushing, telangiectasias, and small visible blood vessels associated with rosacea. The light energy is absorbed by hemoglobin within the targeted vessels, causing them to become less visible as the treated area heals.
Because rosacea is a chronic condition, IPL improves visible vascular symptoms but does not eliminate the underlying condition. Medical skincare, prescription treatment, trigger management, and periodic maintenance sessions may also be recommended.
Larger or more defined vascular lesions may be better suited for laser vein and lesion treatment.
IPL also targets excess melanin responsible for sun spots, age spots, and areas of uneven pigmentation. After treatment, brown spots may temporarily appear darker before gradually flaking or fading as the skin renews.
Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and limiting unnecessary sun exposure are essential because IPL cannot prevent new sun damage from developing.
Your skin will be cleansed, and protective eyewear will be provided. The IPL handpiece delivers a series of controlled flashes across the treatment area. Most patients describe the sensation as brief warmth or a light snapping feeling.
Treatment time depends on the size and number of areas being addressed. Your settings will be selected according to your skin type, treatment area, and whether the primary concern is vascular redness, brown pigmentation, or both.
Temporary redness, warmth, mild swelling, or sensitivity can occur following IPL treatment. Pigmented spots may initially darken before gradually clearing. Small treated vessels may temporarily look more noticeable before fading.
Follow your individualized aftercare instructions and avoid picking, scratching, or aggressively exfoliating the treated skin. Sun exposure, tanning, excessive heat, and irritating skincare products should be avoided as directed. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently to protect the treated areas.
Some improvement may be visible after one IPL treatment, but most patients benefit from a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart. The recommended number of sessions depends on your skin type, the condition being treated, its severity, and how your skin responds.
Rosacea, chronic vascular redness, and recurring sun damage may require periodic maintenance treatments. Individual results vary.
IPL primarily addresses red and brown discoloration. If your concerns also include rough texture, enlarged pores, acne scars, or fine lines, your treatment plan may include microneedling, chemical peels, or plasma skin resurfacing.
These services may complement IPL, but they should be performed according to a professionally planned schedule that allows your skin to heal between treatments.
